Additional exercises

In addition to the earlier exercises, you can also enhance the intensity of your hike or run by joining an incline. You can do an incline exercise indoors on the treadmill or outdoor on some hills. Running and exercising uphill helps engage the thigh muscles.

On the treadmill, gradually raise the incline to 5, 10, or 15 percent. Outward, look for a small hill or steep driveway to start.

Aim to do hill practice two to three times a week, to begin. You could even begin with hill training and do the above workouts afterward, or do the workout routine first, followed by hill training.
